How to Hang Lights Under Loft Bed

Loft beds are popular among kids and teenagers because of the extra space. While there are many ways to use that space, one common way is to hang lights under the bed. This can add a fun touch to the room and create an inviting atmosphere. If you’re looking for ideas on how to hang lights under loft bed, keep reading. We’ll show you steps for hanging lights under loft beds.

How to Hang Lights Under Loft Bed

You’ll need to remove the bed frame to hang lights under a loft bed. You can do this by unscrewing the four screws at the top of the bed and pulling it out. Then, you can remove the bed skirt by pulling it down on one side and lifting up on the other. Next, remove the three screws holding the light rail in place and take them off. Finally, hang the lights using the light hooks that came with the light rail.

Hanging lights under a loft bed is a great way to add fun lighting effects to your child’s bedroom. Loft beds are usually elevated, so this is a fun way to take advantage of the extra space. It’s also easy to access the lights, so you can quickly turn them off if your kid wants to go to sleep or he needs quiet time.

Tools and Materials

  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • 3 or more pendant lights (depending on bed height)
  • Hooks (at least twice the width of the lights)
  • Nuts, bolts, and washers (if hooks require them; most will but make this check first to save time!)
  • Level
  • Measuring tape

A Step by Step Guide on How to Hang Lights Under Loft Bed

Step 1: Prep Work

Make sure you have all the tools and materials you need before you start this project. This will make things go much faster! You can choose other measurements, but the most important part of making these is choosing the right height for the lights.

To hang lights under your loft bed, first decide how high you want them to be. Measure from the floor to just below where you want them to be hung, then add 2-3 inches to allow for error. For example, if you want the lights to be hung at 36″ high, measure 38″ on one side of the loft bed frame. Take care not to hit the ladder, then mark with a pencil.

Step 2: How Many Lights?

Putting lights under your loft bed is an excellent idea, but what kind should you get, and how many you need to put there! How many depends on the size of your loft bed and beams. You also can buy long strips of LED lights that can be daisy-chained together, so no matter how long you want your light display, you can make it happen!

Hang your loft bed lights four feet apart, or as far apart as your beams allow. Most sets come with enough wire for this distance. Keep this in mind when purchasing or planning out where to put your loft bed lights.

Step 3: How High Up?

Using a tape measure, measure from one-bed frame corner to the opposite diagonal corner. This will give you an approximate height for where you want your lights to hang–measure and mark this out in pencil on the beams with care not to hit them with any tools. When drilling, make sure nobody is standing below you when starting your work for safety reasons! If your beam is made of a soft wood like pine, you will need to use a hole saw attachment with a drill bit that’s slightly smaller than the diameter of your lights’ cord.

The wider the hole is in comparison to the cord, the easier it will be to get the cord through, so try not to make it too tight of a fit. Test out your fit by inserting the cord through and measuring how much slack there is. This will give you an idea of how long your lights should be.

Step 4: How High Down?

It would help if you had some clearance when hanging Lights Under Loft Bed, so add at least another 22 inches onto your measurement from step three. Mark this spot in pencil on one beam with care not to hit it with any tools used for installation. Again, be careful! If what you’re working on is metal, take advance precautions before moving forward to prevent any unwanted injuries.

Step 5: How Far Apart?

Check to make sure your lights are spaced four feet apart before you start hanging things. The easiest way not to miss this is by laying the lights flat along the beams instead of having them hang downwards–this allows for an easier installation, but you can also measure out the four-foot distance between each light if they are already hung!

Step 6: How Much Wire Will You Need?

Be sure to consider how much wire comes in your kit when buying it so that you have enough wire for everything without waste or potentially running short! If in doubt, buy more wire than you think you might need, just in case! Most kits come with three or four feet of wire, so if you have a loft bed with beams more than three or four feet apart at their widest point, you’ll need to allow for extra wire. How much depends on how wide your beams are!

You Have Enough Wire for Everything

Step 7: Start Drilling

You’ve got all your tools, you’ve made your measurements–now it’s time to hang those lights! First, put on your safety goggles if you have them. If you don’t, the glasses or sunglasses you usually wear are better than nothing!

Drill several holes along each beam at the same height. How many vary depending on how wide your beams are. Drill far enough down that the screws can go in straight but not too far down that they touch wood. It would help if you drilled into the beams until about an inch remained above each hole.

Step 8: Screw in Hooks

Screw the hooks into each hole. How many screws depends on how wide your beams are and the thickness of your wood. Two or three should be plenty for a normal beam-thickness hook screw combination.

Step 9: Hang Lights Under Loft Bed

If your lights have a plug, you can hang them up now–if not, grab some wire and make an X underneath with it, making sure to leave enough slack for movement!

There’s no need to secure the wire from moving as this will happen naturally as you raise it off the ground. Just make sure they’re hanging straight! We used three pendant lights under our loft bed that hangs 33″ high in testing our measurements. This measurement was taken from the floor to just about where we wanted them. They couldn’t hang much lower than this and still allow the bed to be raised without hitting the top of their wireframes.

Make Sure They're Hanging Straight

Using these measurements, we hung three lights that measure 4′ each in length from a hook that is 3 inches wide and 10″ deep that was screwed into a beam 30″ off of the ground. Four screws were used per hook, with two holes drilled for each screw. The measurements taken, hooks purchased and holes drilled were very accurate–however, there was enough room for error! Nevertheless, the hooks were straight, and the lights looked wonderful!

Step 10: Level and Check

These lights were hung about a foot higher than the top of the ladder. How high you hang your lights is entirely up to you, but if you plan on using these for their primary purpose, they should be easy enough to reach when laying in bed! Hanging your loft bed lights too low can cause neck strain–you may consider having a stool or chair where you can sit and comfortably turn them on and off.

How many hooks will depend on how wide your beams are, how thick your wood is and how many lights you wish to hang under your loft bed. You may want one hook per light or perhaps two–it all depends upon the height at which you choose to hang them at. Be sure not to hang them too low that they interfere with the bed when it’s raised, nor so high that they’re entirely out of reach!

If you want to hang lights under your loft bed, but aren’t exactly sure what you’ll need or how to do it, don’t panic–you’ve come to the right place! We found some inexpensive lights at our local hardware store (not an affiliate link) and followed a few simple steps to drape them underneath.

This is a project anyone can do as long as they have a step ladder. It may take those who are not familiar with tools a little longer than those who are more experienced–but if we can do it, so can you! These steps will help in how to hang lights under loft bed.

Precautions

  • Make sure the lights are not plugged in when you hang them. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation of the light kit. If possible, install the light equipment before assembling the loft bed. This will make it easier to see what you are doing.
  • If you are using fluorescent lights, they may hum when turned on. This is normal and can be minimized by hanging them as close to the ceiling. However, do not hang the light too close to the bed, or it might make a loud buzzing sound when in use.
  • Never hang anything on the bottom side of the loft bed. It is not designed to handle the weight and may cause damage or possible injury.
